General Motors (NYSE: GM) designs, manufactures and markets cars, crossovers, trucks and automobile parts. It offers features for special needs drivers, OnStar vehicle protection, service, parts, accessories, maintenance, XM satellite radio, features for commercial owners, and more. It also provides automotive financing service through General Motors Financial Company, Inc. (GM Financial). It operates in four automotive segments, including GM North America (GMNA), GM Europe (GME), GM International Operations (GMIO) and GM South America (GMSA). It produces vehicles in 37 countries under thirteen brands, which include Alpheon, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Holden, HSV, Opel, Vauxhall, Wuling, Baojun, Jie Fang, UzDaewoo. General Motors Company was founded on September 16, 1908 by William C. Durant and Charles Stewart Mott in Flint, Michigan and is currently headquartered in Detroit. It employs 216,000 people and does business in more than 120 countries. It started with only the Buick Motor Company, but it has acquired more than 20 companies in just a matter of years that include Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Oakland, which is known today as Pontiac. Opel became part of General Motors 30 years after it entered the automobile market in 1899. It later added Chevrolet and Vauxhall. General Motors has several joint ventures, including Shanghai GM, SAIC-GM-Wuling and FAW-GM in China, GM-AvtoVAZ in Russia, Ghandhara Industries in Pakistan, GM Uzbekistan, General Motors India, General Motors Egypt, and Isuzu Truck South Africa. It holds holds a 20% stake in IMM, and a 77% stake in GM Korea. Other acquisitions include Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, Reliance Motor Truck Company, Hughes Aircraft, National Electric Vehicle Sweden, Daewoo Motor America, HUMMER, American Credit and Ally Financial Inc. Some of these subsidiaries were already sold even before General Motors became public for $15.8 billion on November 18, 2010, which is considered as one of the world's top five largest IPOs to date. It was formerly known as NGMCO before it changed it names to General Motors in 2009. Its top competitors in the automotive market include Toyota, an automotive manufacturer in Japan; Tesla, which engages in designing, manufacturing and marketing of electric cars and vehicle power train components; and PACCAR, which designs, manufactures and distributes light, medium and heavy-duty trucks. It has led global vehicle sales for 77 consecutive years between 1931 and 2007, which is longer than any other major players in the automotive industry.
