Costco Summary Information

Costco (NASDAQ, COST) is an online membership based warehouse club for electronic appliances, grocery, accessories, baby goods, household and beauty products. It was founded in 1983 and has its corporate headquarters in Issaquah, Washington. Costco Wholesale Corporation is an American-membership only warehouse club that offers a wide selection of merchandise. As of 2014, it is the third largest retailer in the United States. Through members, its overall corporate history dates back to 1976 when its former competitor Price Club was founded in San Diego, California. Its first office was in a converted airplane hangar. The company realized that it could achieve far greater buying power by serving small businesses as well as choose an audience from non-business members. In 1983, the company opened its first warehouse in Seattle. It became the first company to achieve growth from zero to $3 billion in sales in less than six years. In 1993, the Price Club and Costco merged to become PriceCostco. At that time, it already had 206 locations and was generating $16 billion in annual sales. Costco thrives in the philosophy : Keep costs down and pass the savings to our members. As a result, the company offers the lowest possible price for its members. Since adopting the Costco name in 1997, the company has grown worldwide. As of December 2015, Costco has 689 warehouses globally. In the United States alone, it already has 481 warehouses in 43 states and in Puerto Rico. The biggest warehouse is in Salt Lake City which has just opened in 2015. Costco offers three types of membership namely Executive, Business, and Gold Star. Executive members are entitled to a 2% annual Reward up to $750 on qualified purchases. Aside from that, they also receive additional benefits and greater discounts on many Costco services, including travel privileges. Gold Star and Business memberships are subject to a $55 annual membership which can be upgraded to Executive membership for an additional $55 a year. Costco accepts three types of payments. Costco Cash cards can be purchased online or in the warehouse. They are loadable and can be used for making non-cash purchases at all warehouses in Australia and the United States. For credit cards, Costco accepts American Express, MasterCard, PayPal Credit and Visa cards. At Costco stores and gas stations, American Express is the only accepted credit card in Japan, the United Kingdom, and in the United States until April 2016.
