YES Prep Blog YES Prep Hobby School Opening

New public school opening in southeast Houston as families register for YES Prep's wait list in record numbers YES Prep Public Schools is welcoming new students at YES Prep Hobby, its 19th campus, this school year. The public charter school system, which helps graduates earn college degrees at five times the rate of their peers, is expanding as more than 7,000 students await an opportunity to attend a YES Prep school. Across the street from Hobby Airport, the new sound-proofed campus will, for the first time, ring the school bell on August 15. The school will open to an inaugural sixth-grade class and grow students into grades seven through 12 in subsequent years. Jessica Ochoa's daughter is one of the sixth-grade students excited (and a little nervous about meeting new teachers and making new friends) at YES Prep Hobby. "I chose YES Prep Hobby because I want for her to be safe and cared for at school. I want her to be challenged so she can develop to her full potential and have the most opportunities available to her now and in whatever profession she would enjoy doing in the future," Ms. Ochoa said. Serving more than 14,000 students in grades six to 12 as the highest performing public school system in Houston, all of YES Prep's eligible schools are ranked in the top 10 percent in Texas and nationally by U.S. News and World Report. YES Prep's charter schools are open and tuition-free to all children with no special requirements for admittance, providing special education, English language learning and all public school services. Despite most students entering YES Prep Public Schools performing below grade level, YES Prep educators have, for more than 20 years, increased the number of middle and high school students from underserved communities who graduate from college prepared to lead. Teachers and staff at YES Prep Hobby are ready to do the same for students at their new campus. "Our years of hard work and classroom experience have led up to this-warmly welcoming students and their families to a school dedicated to inspiring their success in college and the career of their choice with instructional rigor, high expectations and caring support systems," YES Prep Hobby Principal Chase Sander said. YES Prep plans to expand into elementary grades next school year, giving Houston families more options for their children's K-12 education. Consistently named one of Houston's "Best Places to Work" by the Houston Business Journal, YES Prep is recruiting more educators than ever for its growing number of schools. Teachers seeking the next opportunity providing students a college-ready education and families interested in having their child attend YES Prep can learn more about YES Prep Public Schools at www.yesprep.org.
