Last week a colleague of mine, let's call him Joe S for now, copied me on an e-mail that gave a short definition on the use of different Bill of Material line types in AX 2012. This intrigued me quite a bit so I set up a multi-level (3) BOM structure to work through some of the basics. If you are an AX 2012 novice like I still am here are some basics, the BOM line type has 4 options: line, phantom, pegged supply, and service. One we can dispense with right off, the service line type, it is used effectively to manage outside subcontracting services. The other 3 line types were used in the test I put together.
