The Tire Squire Blog Understanding How Different ATV Tires Work

If it is time for you to replace your OE ATV tires, we have a short guide to help you understand the different types of ATV / UTV tires on the market to help you make the most informed decision. General PurposeGeneral purpose ATV tires are designed to cover a variety of terrain types, but not necessarily to deliver extreme performance on any one in particular. The tread is usually set wide enough to gain purchase on loose soils at lower speeds, but narrow enough to provide a relatively smooth ride on hard surfaces.Hard Pack / Rocky / Rough TerrainATV tires designed for hard & rough surfaces often feature higher body ply counts than general purpose tires since the terrain is much more demanding and durability and puncture resistance are extremely important. Additionally, treadblock patterns are much closer together, & often much heftier, to increase the total amount of surface area in contact with the ground. MudMud ATV tires are designed to really dig into dirt and mud. Most have extremely wide set tread blocks that can be up to one to two inches deep. The rubber in these types of tires is usually compounded to be much stiffer to offer superior structural support in the tread blocks. The drawback from this feature is that they do not have excellent traction over harder packed dirt, so be careful. Sand Sand tires have an extremely unique tread pattern that is quite recognizable. In order to gain traction over loose sand, sand tires are usually lighter weight to provide flotation and have a tread pattern that greatly resembles a paddle wheel. The front end tires are usually extremely simple with only slim central tread that allows the ATV to maneuver.
