Jacksonville business wants to help you reach your health goals Story and Photos By Kyla Hurt A newer business in Jacksonville is rapidly growing after Dr. Justin Hamel, DC, MS, and Clara Hamel, LCSW, ultimately decided to focus on their vision of opening a wellness facility. In the spring of 2024, the couple purchased what was MELT Infrared Sauna and renamed it “1° Performance & Longevity.” Along with the rename, the two began to shape and grow the business into something different. Their goal is a facility that promotes healing, wellness and human performance through a combination of state-of-the-art technology and age-old techniques. The couple’s ultimate goal is a longevity and human performance facility in downtown Jacksonville; they feel that the purchase of MELT was an opportunity to combine that business with what they were already planning. Clara Hamel shares that they named their business 1° Performance & Longevity because, “One of the things that we consistently told people is that you don’t have to make a huge change in your health overnight. Sometimes it starts with just one degree of change — and when you consistently make that one degree of change, it doesn’t take that long to turn your health around.” The overall idea of their business is to help individuals get into a better place of health and wellness – mentally, physically and nutritionally. Currently, 1° Performance & Longevity offers a variety of modalities and services: – ARRC LED red light therapy is the use of red or near-infrared light to reduce inflammation and pain, energize, and detoxify and feed the body’s cells. By changing the cells in the body, the benefits cascade down into nearly every tissue, organ and system in the body. – Mystic River Cold Plunge – Infrared Sauna – PEMF is the utilization of soothing Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields to stimulate and exercise the body’s cells, infusing the body with natural energy at the cellular level. Overall, the Hamels fully believe that their business is important for people. Clara Hamel states, “We were practicing together, me doing counseling and him doing physical medicine, and we were just consistently seeing the same issues with our patients, that their stress was, in one way or another, destroying health. At that point, we really started talking about what we could do to keep ourselves healthy … but also to promote health and wellness in other people.” Justin Hamel agrees, “While treating so many people in my chiropractic office, I noticed an increase in chronic illness, autoimmune diseases and mental health problems with my patients. And that was happening with younger and younger patients, so I wanted to look for answers to again, like Clara said, not only to help my clients and give them more natural healing modalities and options, but also to keep my family healthy.” The Hamels share that they have already received a lot of feedback from clients; those coming to 1° Performance & Longevity have stated increase in mental clarity, increase in energy, reduced inflammation and pain, and improved quality of sleep, for examples.
