A longtime journalist with decades of experience, Gunn joined Landmark Media Enterprises, parent company of The Pilot and Inside Business, in 2013 as editor of Capital Gazette Communications before the sale of those properties to The Baltimore Sun last year, Richardson said. As editor of The Virginian-Pilot, Gunn will oversee the news gathering and presentation operations of the state's largest daily newspaper. As top editor of the Capital Gazette, Gunn "improved the paper with a clear mission of local news and information, a digital-first strategy, enterprise coverage and strong reader engagement," Richardson said in the announcement. Gunn's professional experience includes 18 years at The Charlotte Observer, where he held various leadership roles, along with work in newsroom positions at New York Newsday/Newsday, the Dallas Times Herald and the Kansas City Times and Star. He has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a master's in journalism from Columbia University. Gunn will begin his new role June 8, and he and his wife, Jean, will relocate to Norfolk from Annapolis. The Pilot's Managing Editor, Katrice Hardy, led the newsroom in the interim following the March departure of Pilot editor Denis Finley, who served as editor for 10 years.
