Jay Mathews of the Washington Post wrote a column last month on American elementary schools "holding back" some students who may be ahead of the class in many ways. One example of "holding back" is when an elementary school teacher didn't want a fourth grader to be in her "high-level" class because he didn't finish his homework regularly. Another teacher did something similar with a gifted math student who found elementary school-level problems boring.Often times, we get tutoring leads because students are behind in class and cannot understand the material they are learning. But tutoring can also help students who are ahead of the curve enrich themselves -- and brush up on their study skills.
