Austin has a zine culture?! Yep. And we're now part of it.As an indie publication, we feel it's important to represent the do-it-yourselfers out there, including ourselves. So, read on to hear about our latest outing with some awesome people supporting print publications.Backyard at Friends & Neighbors on May 4, 2014.Last Sunday, on cinco de cuatro (apparently a real thing), we meet up with Austin Zine Fest organizers, Carly Knowles and Hillary-Anne Crosby at Friends & Neighbors.* We talked about curating, fundraising and our upcoming Kickstarter while enjoying $3 micheladas at Friends & Neighbors. Snapshot Magazine with Austin Zine Fest at Friends & Neighbors.We were recently criticized for using the word curate in a blog post. We understand there are professionals who go through intense training and scholarship to become Curators (emphasis on the capital C). All the same, we are the ones collecting, selecting and editing the content for our publication. That's the basis of zine culture -gathering what's relevant to you and sharing it. When mag choices have traditionally been relegated to pages full of celebrity gossip, how-to-be-a-woman advertisements and editorialized from an unknown person with deep pockets, you want to go out into the world and discover for yourself what is true. With this comes new understanding and appreciation for what is ignored and silenced in those industry mags.But it isn't cheap. It takes time and money to curate and fund the printing. As of today, Snapshot is storyboarding a Kickstarter fundraiser to cover issue 02 print costs. Our Austin Zine Fest friends have had some success fundraising online and we hope to see a good turnout for our publication, Snapshot.***Friends & Neighbors is a new coffee/retail/hang-out space in East Austin.**Local Austin zines, fields and Vagina: The Zine, had some pretty rad success this Spring.***(Speaking of fundraisers) Austin Zine Fest will be fundraising for a space to hold zines.
