They wanted a smooth, fast ride and so developed the abrasion resistant Z.About: 1975 was a year that some would call the beginning of 3 year rise of the popularity and expressionism that was to come of skateboarding (especially in sunny California). Riders were doing it 'old school' as we now know it and skateboarding was out for an exciting beginning.Z-Flex is one of the very few skate companies that started in the 70's and are still around today. The brand started in Venice, California as The Zephyr surfboard production surf shop decided to branch out into skateboard production. The shop created its first Zephyr board "an alternative to surfing when the waves were flat".California in the 70s was the place to be, a huge drought meant there were a lot of empty swimming pools begging to be skated. The Zephyr team which is now Z-Flex were deep in the heart of it. Their board designs and innovative approach to production still embodies the opportunistic, anti-establishment sentiment that remains evident in skateboarding to this day.
