You probably know how your vehicle sounds when it's running properly. Listening to your car can help you troubleshoot problems. If you hear a strange sound, pay attention and make sure to take note what it is doing, when. If you hear a high squeal that stops after you shut of the engine, it could be caused by a belt. These belts should have about half an inch of play and shouldn't be frayed, cracked, or glazed on the underside. If the noise is continuous after shutting off the engine, make sure to check the radiator cap. Sometimes the rubber gasket might be worn and will need to be replaced. A ticking noise when the vehicle is on is another cause for concern. Make sure to turn off the vehicle, wait ten minutes for the engine to cool and the oil to settle, and then check the oil level. If you have enough oil, make sure to bring the vehicle in so we can check it over closer. If you hear a loud tapping or knocking sound in your engine, pull to the side of the road and call for road service. The source may be a loose rocker arm or carbon buildup inside the engine, but if it's a loose bearing or a faulty piston, it can destroy the engine. Mild knocking may be the result of using fuel with the wrong octane rating. You hear a whistling noise coming from under the hood, check the hoses for vacuum leaks. If the whistling comes from inside the vehicle, there's probably a leak in the weather stripping. If the engine starts to misfire, check the spark plugs to ensure they are connected and clean. A squealing noise can indicate an issue with the brake pads and they have worn down too far. Brakes that are glazed over or worn down can result in this noise as well. Since having the brakes working effectively is vital to the vehicle, make sure to have it inspected by us as soon as possible. This can help you to have a reliable vehicle this winter. The post Odd Noises to Be Aware of appeared first on Shoreview Exxon.
