Although exciting, this technology only grazes its future potential. Academia in particular is expanding the material and machine limitations of 3-D printing to use the technology in tissue engineering. Biomaterials are being formulated and extruded for scaffolds or for cell-laden constructs. This spin off on classic 3-D printing is still quite new, with limited research as well as commercialization and regulatory issues; however, this is sure to change within the next 10 years.
