A recently released study by researchers at University of Calgary's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada shows the potential of ear-tag and in-ear accelerometers to monitor feeding and rumination behavior in cattle. Feeding can already be monitored with 95% accuracy, but more work needs to be done to improve the accuracy of rumination monitoring.One of the goals of this technology would be to inform farmers and ranchers of sick animals before they show obvious symptoms as feeding and rumination behavior can be early indicators of an unwell animal.read more
