As an autism educator, consultant, trainer, and sister, I'm often in a position to try to explain autism to others. While it's easy to repeat the psychological definition, anyone who has ever met a person with autism knows there is much more to their autism than a single definition. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that individuals who receive a diagnosis vary greatly in how they exhibit different characteristics. As the saying goes, 'If you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism.' In this episode of Arthur, George meets Carl, a young 'rabbit' with Asperger's Syndrome.* George finds Carl fascinating for his love and knowledge of trains, his ability to draw, and his interesting personality. The show does a good, though slightly abstract, job of explaining how Carl uniquely thinks and interprets the world - while also giving out some great practical advice for friends of children with autism, such as talking more softly and explaining the meaning behind jokes and puns.
