Promise Photography Blog Posing 101 - Where It All Begins!

Posing - None of these are my favorite words, however they are words that always come to mind during a photo shoot. I catch myself constantly repeating these things over and over to my clients: "Relax" "Take a deep breath" "Shake your arms, wiggle around, loosen up" "Think of a happy moment in time" "Whisper something out loud" "Tell me the funniest thing you have heard this week" Does it work? Sometimes, but not always. Let's face it, most folks don't want to be in front of the camera, yet we all want that amazing picture of our kids, families and even ourselves. We all want one great picture that makes us look like rock stars that we can use for profile pictures, social media and a slew of other things. How do we get that pose, that perfect picture? I am not going to pull any punches here - it's not always easy - but I can help you make it better! Here are a few tips to get you on the right track before your photo session. First - Choose the right photographer. According to Wikipedia, Photography is the science, art and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film. Sounds like something that anyone can learn right? Well, it's not so simple. Part of what makes a good photograph is the chemistry between the photographer, the subject, and the camera. Make sure your photographer not only understands the science of the art, but that he or she understands your fears, goals and discomfort. It's our job as photographers to put you at ease and help you capture a perfect moment in time...one you can cherish forever. Second - now you have made your choice. You still have to sit in front of that dreaded camera lens! Let's face it - we are not professional models and we just don't like it! It's like a chemistry test so let's get prepared! Do your online homework. There are thousands and thousands of pictures online. Kazillions of photography websites. Find examples that appeal to you - find pictures than match your objectives. Send your photographer samples of what you like and don't like, maybe even from their own website! Us photogs, we have lots of posing ideas - but maybe yours is better. Don't be afraid to share your ideas! Third - the dreaded science. So up to now I have mentioned chemistry, science, electromagnetic radiation and lots of other techie terms. Pretty boring right? Well guess what - there really is a little bit of scientific engineering that goes into posing. Some do's and don't's to keep in mind: Keep your arms away from your body (there is a reason all these teens keep their hands on their hips when posing!)Jut out your chin - we like to call this turtlin'Tilt your headRotate your shouldersBend one kneeSlightly twist at the hipMost importantly - do not stand up straight at attention. Your picture will look as awkward as it feels. Fourth - enjoy the moment! Think of this as fun. When you are enjoying yourself, the poses will almost certainly take care of themselves. When you laugh, giggle, and make those googly eyes at your fiancé those moments are the real you. You can bet my finger is on the trigger and I am snapping. So often, those shots will be the most cherished of the session! Don't be afraid to be silly, romantic and spontaneous! Your photographer will thank you!
