Snow can turn little mistakes into big problems. Here are 5 common mistakes to avoid while driving in the snow. 1. Thinking your four-wheel drive makes you invincible. Four-wheel drive sends the torque to each of your car's four tires, but that doesn't mean that you can race down the road and bring yourself to a quick stop! 2. Not being prepared! Many drivers find themselves caught off guard during the winter. Be Prepared: Make sure you have an ice scraper in the car, ample antifreeze in the engine, and the other essentials for weathering winter travel. (See checklist on our 11/12/14 blog.) 3. Following too closely. Stopping in the snow takes longer so the space between you and the car ahead of you should be longer too. 4. Slamming on the brakes. Once you've lost traction and your wheels are locked up, slamming your brakes won't change the situation. When you feel yourself begin to skid ease off the accelerator and let the car slow down on its own. 5. Driving too fast. Driving too fast is the biggest snow driving error. Drivers have a bad habit of thinking that once they've reached the highway they're fine to drive at their usual high speed. Wrong.
