Is it possible to overwinter tropical lilies? The short answer is yes. Our preference is to allow the tropical lily to go dormant for the winter. First thing, stop fertilizing them. Then remove the lily from the planting basket. Take out the tubers and rinse each one well with a strong stream of water. Trim off remnants of roots or stems. Store the tubers in a glass jar that is filled with damp, not wet, peat moss, sphagnum moss, or sand. Keep the container in a room that stays over 50 degrees. Check them once a month. If they are dried out, spritz them with water. Once water temps get above 60 degrees in the spring, they can be replanted into the basket with fresh soil.
