Source: MarketscreenerLearn more about how Delta is prioritizing sustainable innovation through fuel saving efforts in Hilo, Hawaii . Case in point: Every destination and airport are different and presents unique opportunities to save jet fuel, especially when the right thinkers and innovators are at the forefront. Enter Delta's Flight Ops and OCC teams, who, in collaboration with Delta 's cross-functional Carbon Council , pioneered a new landing approach into Hilo Airport in Hawaii . As the most eastern runway in Hawaii , Hilo Airport presents challenges and opportunities. The Delta OCC identified an opportunity to optimize the route and landing approach to save jet fuel for flights across the Pacific that use this island as a diversion point. The team quickly got to work and began collaborating with Delta Flight Ops to create, chart, test, and certify a new, unique-to- Delta landing approach into Hilo airport that requires less jet fuel. While this is one airport out of the hundreds Delta uses to support the operation, it exemplifies how the airline is making changes within its control to save on jet fuel where it can, as well as how even seemingly small changes can drive cost savings. Nearly every one of Delta 's more than 4,000 daily flights presents an opportunity to save jet fuel with two main benefits: financial savings (jet fuel is one of Delta 's biggest cost drivers); and reduced carbon emissions. Even one gallon of jet fuel savings per flight presents a savings opportunity, especially when you think of the scale of the Delta operation. Earlier this year, Delta announced that it hit its first fuel savings milestone of achieving one percent fuel burn savings, or 45 million gallons of jet fuel, from operational improvements*. These fuel savings are worth more than $110M in cost savings for the global carrier. Initiatives like this Hilo airport landing procedure add up to positively impact Delta 's business. The Delta people are no stranger to solving hard problems - that's the Delta Difference - and as Delta celebrates 100 years of flight, the airline will continue to look for ways to innovate and lead the industry in everything it does. *Compared to 2019, and relative to what we would have used if Delta had not undertaken any fuel efficiency efforts, not including fleet renewal. © 2025 Delta Air Lines, Inc. .
