Birthed by the Greeks, albeit with caveats concerning the definition of "citizen", and borne as a standard by the British and, more lately, the American Empires, democracy is under threat from within and without. American and Australian versions of democracy are making the Senate from Star Wars look functional as they struggle with intransigence, short-termism, internecine warfare and ironically the impacts of popularism.
