You generally start a new year full of hope and wonder. I certainly do. It's a chance for new beginnings, bigger goals and renewed focus. It's a positive time, when resolutions haven't unravelled and possibilities appear endless. It's a joyful time too. For several days beyond the strike of midnight you're greeted with "Happy New Year". Then you switch on the news. This year has started with a barrage of negative news stories. Day after day we've woken up to reports of not just the bad things happening around the world, but horrific events unfolding on our television screens, newspapers and social media feeds. It's virtually impossible to hide from the big news reports, no matter how dire or depressing. I'm an optimist, so tuning into these news stories is a predicament.
