Professor Gordon Patterson, Professor of History at the Florida Institute of Technology gives a riveting account of how a tireless dedication to science and public welfare gave birth to the mosquito control movement in California back in the early 1900s, resulting in the California's Mosquito Abatement Districts Act (AB 1590). This year (2015) marks the 100th anniversary of the legislation and Patterson tells the tale of the four individuals who through courage and perseverance brought mosquito control to the state saving countless lives from mosquito-borne diseases with their efforts. A century later, the threat is just as great, and efforts to combat mosquitoes and other vectors are even more critical to protect more than 38 million Californians.
