A Nostalgic Journey That Honors PlayStation's HisÂtory
Astro Bot is
more than just a platformer; it's a tribute to the history of PlayStation, filled with
nostalgia while improving on its predecessor in every way. Following the
character's debut in 2018's VR title, Astro has now become the PlayStation
mascot, taking on the role of ambassador for the console's heritage.
For those who played Astro’s Playroom, the basics are familiar: a mix of
combat and 3D platforming. However, the sequel introduces a wide variety of
levels, fresh gameplay mechanics, and surprises throughout the journey. The plot
follows Astro on a quest across different planets to rescue his scattered
friends after their spaceship is destroyed in space.
The game builds upon the mechanics of the original, and the level design by Team
Asobi feels more creative and diverse this time around. Each level features
unique interactions made possible by special items Astro can use, like rocket
boosters, giant hands for climbing, and a time-slowing watch. Even without these
accessories, Astro Bot excels as a 3D platformer with fantastic visuals and
challenging platforming sections.
The use of the DualSense
controller is also a standout feature, just as it was in
Astro’s Playroom. The sequel takes full advantage of the PS5 controller,
delivering tactile sensations such as the feel of sand or water surfaces, along
with some surprisingly precise feedback effects. However, the vibration can be a
bit too much at times, especially when combined with the sound effects that play
directly through the controller.
One of the best aspects of Astro Bot is its creativity in hiding secrets.
Completing a level isn't just about reaching the end; it's also about rescuing
hidden robots and collecting puzzle pieces. These collectibles, scattered
throughout each level, are often well-hidden, prompting players to thoroughly
explore every corner.
The game includes a helpful accessibility feature: a bird that provides hints
for undiscovered items. This feature can be unlocked with coins after finishing
a level, making it easier to revisit and find missed secrets.
Nostalgia plays a key role in Astro Bot, with several robots representing iconic
PlayStation characters—ranging from well-known figures like Aloy, Kratos, and Ratchet to obscure
characters from older titles. These rescued robots gather at the
spaceship's crash site and can unlock additional paths, while coins earned
in-game can be used to obtain items that unlock further interactions and
customisations.
AÂ special touch is the unique levels at the end of each world, which offer
unexpected gameplay shifts that are best experienced firsthand. These moments
demonstrate the dedication Team Asobi has put into crafting memorable
experiences, comparable to how Super Smash
Bros. Ultimate celebrated gaming history on the Nintendo Switch.
In the end, Astro Bot truly lives up to the clichés—it's a love letter to
PlayStation and the games that shaped its legacy. Team Asobi has used
PlayStation's rich history to create a platformer that's both a fantastic game
on its own and a nostalgic journey for fans.
