Don’t we all wish to be able to live longer? (Well, for one, living longer would allow us to travel more!)   There is one island in Greece called Ikaria, where people do live longer than anywhere else on earth. This remote island has been described as a ‘hotspot of exceptional human longevity’. There are more healthy people over 90 than on any other place on earth!   Science says that 20% of longevity is determined by our genes- the rest is lifestyle. That’s a whopping 80%! So what are the secrets of the people of Ikaria? How can WE live longer?   Firstly, Ikaria has no fast food or mechanized conveniences. They have preserved age old customs that scientists believe have helped to increase their lifespan. The Ikarian diet is a Mediterranean diet - lots of olive oil, vegetables and fish. It’s low in meat and sugar. The Ikarians also drink goat milk, which is easier to digest, and promotes relaxation. There are over 150 types of wild greens on the island, which are full of antioxidants. The Ikarians also drink a relaxing type of herbal tea - no caffeine.   Ikarians also exercise without even trying -  lots of walking on the rugged terrain is a regular part of Ikarian life.   On top of that- everyone naps! A 30 minute siesta in the middle of the day is a normal part of daily Ikarian life. Naps help reduce stress, and help you look and feel younger.   Lastly, a strong sense of community and family reinforces bonding, laughter and ultimately happiness.   How would you incorporate some of these tips into your lifestyle?
