Manassas Smiles Blog When and How Often Should You Brush Your Teeth?

Unless your dentist specifically advises you to brush more often, ideally it is recommended to brush twice a day: once in the morning and again in the evening before going to bed for effective dental care. Brushing in the morning gets rid of bad "morning" breath and bacteria. In the evening, brushing before bed helps remove food particles and plaque and freshens our breath, along with reducing cavity-causing bacteria. When brushing your teeth, it is important to remember it is not a race, nor do you have to brush so hard, as when trying to get baked-on food out of a baking dish with a scouring pad. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush in small circular motions, using a light to gentle touch, and make sure to brush for a total of two minutes every time, and brush the front, back, and top of the teeth. In addition, you need to use a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen and protect the enamel layer on the teeth, which is eroded by decay-causing bacteria and is how most cavities begin. To further help control plaque, it is also recommended to floss once a day in the evening to help remove trapped food particles and plaque from in between the teeth. For more information about how to brush or floss, assistance in selecting the right dental care products, or a preventive checkup and cleaning, please feel free to contact Manassas Smiles at (703) 659-9034 today!
