Lumense: Lumense Introduces First Affordable, Continuous Ammonia Monitor for Poultry.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Lumense, an Atlanta-based developer of real-time sensors capable of continuously measuring the concentration of trace chemicals and biologicals in gases and liquids, announced today, at the International Production & Processing Expo in booth C13016, the availability of the Lumense Ammonia Monitor. Operating within the SensorITTM platform, the Lumense Ammonia Monitor is the first product on the market to continuously monitor ammonia levels and automatically provide those readings to house ventilation controllers. This allows growers to continuously optimize ventilation, thus increasing bird performance and reducing feed cost. "The Lumense Ammonia Monitor and its SensorIT platform can really help with these problems." Experts estimate that better management of ammonia can bring a five to seven percent productivity improvement to the $100 billion (worldwide) broiler industry. Continuous optimization of ammonia levels in poultry houses can increase processing yield and feed efficiency, reduce bird stress and disease, and improve bird uniformity. Lumense estimates that the Ammonia Monitor will pay for itself in less than six months."Ammonia monitoring and optimal ventilation is a key issue in the poultry industry. Bird performance and feed conversion go down, and mortality generally goes up, as ammonia increases. Even fifteen minutes of exposure to high ammonia levels can stunt the growth of young chicks, and it is very difficult to assess ammonia levels, particularly at night," said Mike Slawson, Lumense's Chief Executive Officer. "The Lumense Ammonia Monitor and its SensorIT platform can really help with these problems."The Lumense Ammonia Monitor contains all the functionality needed for the sensor to operate independently or within a network. The unit contains a communications interface, a user interface with a touchscreen display, a power supply, and the plumbing necessary to draw poultry house air through the sensor. The user interface allows the user to adjust alert thresholds, communication modes, security constraints, and to easily view recent and historical data for applicable targets. Readings, taken every two minutes from air drawn at beak level, are provided around-the-clock to house ventilation controllers through an analog interface. The unit uses a standard power outlet, is easily installed and maintained, and comes with a one-year warranty.About LumenseLumense offers real-time, in situ, chemical and biological sensors for use in a broad range of applications, including those in the water, food and beverage, and agriculture sectors. Lumense developed SensorIT, a common, scalable sensor platform augmented with low cost optical detectors customized for specific targets, allowing customers to move from a reactive to a proactive approach to contaminant management and recipe control. The SensorIT platform continuously detects trace amounts of dozens of different substances, many of which previously could only be detected and quantified with expensive laboratory equipment after sampling. The Lumense Ammonia Monitor is the first product released under Lumense's SensorIT technology platform. As part of the platform, customers will be able to view and manage their sensor data remotely and securely. In addition to the Ammonia Monitor, other products include a sensor for detecting trace levels of impurities in gases used by the food and beverage industry and a sensor for monitoring water quality.
