Trinity Mirror looks set to take on Newsquest's local newspaper empire with a £220m takeover of Local World.If the deal is finalised it will see Trinity Mirror take control of over 100 regional titles which the London-based Local World owns. The takeover will also include a 70 websites which will help Trinity Mirror build on the 93.4 million unique browsers it had in September and boost ad revenue.Trinity Mirror currently has a 20 per cent stake in the company, and a regional newspaper portfolio which includes titles such as the Birmingham Mail, Manchester Evening News and Liverpool Echo.Local World formed in 2012 following the merger of more than 100 titles from Daily Mail and General Trust's Northcliffe Media, and Iliffe News & Media which together own around 60 per cent of the company.The company is headed by ex-Trinity Mirror and Mecom chief, David Montgomery, who owns a stake in the business.Iliffe parent Yattendon Group, which holds a 21.3 per cent stake in the company, is understood to be considering keeping some of its 39 titles from Trinity Mirror's acquisition.The deal will make Trinity Mirror a local newspaper giant, adding to the 200 plus regional titles it already owns, and will see it surpass Newsquest in the number of titles it publishes.
