800 million. That's the estimated number of photos that get shared publicly across Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Flickr. Whatsapp apparently adds 600 million more to that staggering total. Every day.Despite the spread of selfies, shoe shots, and food porn, there hasn't been an opportunity for marketers to analyse all that visual information.....until now. American company Ditto Labs have launched a new image-recognition technology that scours images across the web using a logo detection engine to reveal trends, sentiment and how people actually interact with products and brands. The system runs in Amazon's cloud and has between 200 to 300 servers processing "a firehose of images" from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr. These get funneled into a queue that continuously examines the pixels to identify about 1,000 brands currently. To date, Ditto has helped a range of different brands identify connections they would never have found on their own. For instance, according to FastCompany.com, it found people put their Chobani yogurt in their car cupholders to eat it on the way to work. It found beer drinking generally peaks at 11 p.m., but ice cream eating peaks at 1 a.m and it found people are putting French mustard on their broccoli! Ditto also produces competitive reports showing how many times a brand is seen over their competitor, which is then broken down by geography, gender, ethnicity and age. David Rose, inventor of Enchanted Objects, sums up the new software best: "Companies already know their market share but they don't know how much pride or enthusiasm consumers have in their products.
