Kouture Beauty Designs Blog Cleaning your makeup brushes!

Cooler weather is quickly heading our way. If you're anything like me, I'm sure you are jumping for joy at the thought of chai lattes, chunky sweaters, riding boots & scarves. But as most of you know, cooler weather brings along head colds and germs. We should be cleaning our makeup brushes as part of a regular routine, but how many of us actually remember or have the time?? Our brushes are full of old makeup, dirt, oil, dead skin and bacteria. Yuck! It is more important than ever to start incorporating better habits to avoid getting sick or irritating your skin. I have used my fair share of brush shampoos and cleaning sprays, as well as DIY solutions. Some left my brushes feeling dried out and scratchy, or looking like they were never even cleaned. I can honestly say I think I have found the best combo! Between clients or between uses on my personal set of brushes, I spray the "gals" with Daily Brush Cleaner from the Sephora Collection. This spray is anti-bacterial and is super easy to use. It's fine mist also does not leave the brush feeling damp if it is needed right away for another application. However, this doesn't remove everything and is only a quick fix. Now, for the main event... A friend of mine suggested using a bar soap and I must say I was a little skeptical. She swears by this product so I gave it a shot. I am now a believer! It is a bar from "Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps" and that is indeed what they are! I opted for the peppermint. It left my brushes with a nice, light scent. So great, and only $4.50! I bought mine in a local wellness & health food store, but these soaps are available at Target. Yet another reason why I love their store, haha. The bar is made from a combination of organic oils, conditioning the brushes while cleaning. I have brushes that were once pure white. Over time, they've become stained with bronzer and foundations, and never truly go back to normal. Dr. Bronner's took away any and all traces of color. They are once again stark white! I was amazed. It is good to get in the habit of doing a good wash once a week, if using your brushes regularly. What I love is this soap is safe for excessive use, due to its oil content and organic make up. (No pun intended) It is also 100% vegan. Who doesn't love that?? I would love to hear feedback on what products you have tried/loved/hated. Give Dr. Bronner's a try and let me know what you think!
