The key to getting more people visiting your site is by having relevant and succinct content that clearly defines your organisation, your purpose and your services.
To really push this and to make sure your organisation is appearing on the first results in the search engines it is important to perfect your Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This will result in you being ahead of your competitors in the search results and engage with new customers. The following 6 steps will help you increase your organisation’s SEO:
Meta-tags
These provide search engines with information about your site. Search engines can usually read HTML and XHTML-style meta tags, regardless of the code used on the page. Meta tags are added to the <head> section of your HTML page.
Titles
These are critical to giving users a quick insight into the content of your page and why it is relevant to their search. Make sure every page on your site has a title specified in the <title> tag. Page titles should be descriptive and concise. Use a few key words, but avoid key word stuffing (using the same word multiple times) as this looks like spam. It is important that each title on different pages are distinct to ensure pages can be distinguished from each other. Concisely brand your titles but not in every page of your site as this hurts readability.
Description
The meta tag named “description” is a good way to provide a concise, human-readable summary of each page’s content, this description is used as part of the section shown on the search results. Accurate meta descriptions can help improve your clickthrough rate, make sure that every page on your site has a meta description. Wherever possible, create descriptions that accurately describe the specific page – identical or similar descriptions on every page of a site aren’t helpful when individuals appear in web results. Include clearly tagged facts in the description, it doesn’t just need to be in a sentence format, you can include author, date of publication, byline information, price, age and manufacturer about products or blog articles. Ensure that all of your descriptions are truly descriptive because this goes a long way to improving the quality and quantity of your search traffic.
Home page
Not only is your homepage the front window to your company but it is also an important component to improving your SEO. Whilst having your logo, tag line and images on your homepage provides your customer with an inkling as to what your company does it is important to have a sentence or paragraph describing your company as this will help with you appearing on higher results in the search engines.
Cost-per-click
Although not every company wants to go down this route, one of the ways you can increase your SEO is to have other companies advertise and even sell their products or services on your website. Cost per click doesn’t increase your finances substantially, however it will help with your SEO.
Ensure you are social
One way to help your SEO is to make sure your company is on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube etc and that the social media links are integrated onto your company’s website. Updating your social media daily is very important to ensure you stay on top of the results on search engines.
Blogs
Having a blog on your company’s website that is updated frequently is important to your SEO as the more information you have on your business area the more you are depicted as an expert in this field. Getting other experts to write feature blogs for your website can also assist with increasing your SEO. It is important to ensure that your blogs are promoted through your social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook etc to get more people talking about you and your business which again helps with your Search Engine Optimization.
Links to articles
If your company is lucky enough to be featured in an online article such as a newspaper, magazine or blog then this will not only improve your brand awareness but it will also increase your SEO. Therefore, try and create a buzz around your brand through entering competitions, showcasing at various events, offering customers’ deals and promotions and even pitch your product/service to journalists directly to increase your chances of people talking and writing about you.
