Inlingua Blog Learning a New Language through Experiences

Learning Through ExperienceAs the old saying goes "We do not receive wisdom, we must discover it for ourselves, after a journey through the wilderness which no one else can make for us", pretty much describes the experiential learning; a process through which individuals construct their own knowledge, acquire skills and enhance their values directly from experience. You are probably asking right now "What in the world are you talking about?" fair enough, well to sum it up, it's learning through "doing". One of the key elements to succeed in language learning is through experience. When we speak of learning a new language probably the first things that come to your mind are book lessons, reading, and writing. It is clear that the ability to remember words or linguistic structures is essential, and it is mainly obtained by being exposed to the language and listen carefully. But you should know that learning new languages is much more than to pile up books and spend hours studying; it is too about discovering learning motivations based on experiences, experiences that will stick around in your head for years and will enable a higher comprehension of the language. Why am I so bad at languages?Have you asked yourself this question? If you do, don't feel discourage by it, I have no doubt you are an excellent memorizer, but probably the reason is because you haven't allow yourself to getting your hands dirty on your learning, what I mean is that you might have spent a whole month, semester or year reading it from the books but you have not really put that into action, through the application of what you just learned. If what you're learning allows you to come out of your comfort zone and apply that knowledge, it's much easier to stay in your memory. As a matter of fact, it is essential to understand all the grammatical elements of the language you are learning; but learning does not necessarily mean learning grammar rules in a extensive, boring class: when you are immersed in the language and you have to use it to express yourself in real life scenarios, that's when you meet with the benefits to meet a new language through experiential learning. You need some action! For instance, imagine that you are currently learning Italian, and the first weeks you have been lead to learn grammar or vocabulary, spoken or written language based on repetition; perhaps it have been working great for you. But what if you have given the opportunity to take a field trip to an Italian cuisine and be able to immerse in the language and get the most out of the vocab, pronunciation, etiquette rules, etc. I'm pretty sure that experience will stick in your memory for a long time.Remember, when your skills are tested throughout the day, and thanks to challenges like the ones that full immersion offers to you, you will make real progress. In addition, well structure classes in a good language school provide the opportunity to learn from the experts, while you practice with other students who have a similar standpoint upon the learning of a new language.Inlingua School prides to offer students that come from all around the world a privileged connection with the target language through experiential learning and the right living environment; this way they can include new experiences while they understand all the elements of the language.
