Ideaction Corps Blog Epic Adventures for Epic Causes

This month I am traveling to Nepal where I will trek for two weeks to base camp on Mt. Everest - and then run a marathon at 17,500 feet. In July, I will cycle 270+ miles in in Glacier National Park. Two epic adventures mean I am raising money for two epic causes - and I hope you will consider a donation to whichever organization is closest to your heart. UsAgainstAlzheimer's: http://bit.ly/2J9qfmN For families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, every day can seem like a mountain and a marathon. My family went through this, and lost my father to Lewy Body Dementia. It's a bitch of disease and it affects the entire family. But here is the thing - while we don't yet have a cure, there ARE things we can do about this. Science is showing us that we can reduce our risk by incorporating, among other things, more exercise, healthy eating, sleep, mindfulness and connections with others. And it does not start when we are 60 or 70 - it starts now. Things we do throughout our lifespan can have a protective effect, build our cognitive health and reduce our risk of dementia. UsAgainstAlzheimer's, an innovative patient advocacy organization, has launched a Brain Health Partnership initiative that is focused on leveraging the latest science to ensure that families have every tool at their disposal. Donations to UsAgainstAlzheimer's support this very hopeful and important work! http://bit.ly/2J9qfmN Climate Ride: http://bit.ly/2H8DTEf If current patterns keep up, most of the glaciers covering the Himalayas could melt within the next 50 years; 80 percent will be gone within 30 years. Tens of thousands of people may be at risk. Forty thousand Sherpas live at the base of Mount Everest. When talking to The Independent, Peter Hillary compared the effects of a glacial outburst flood to an atomic bomb. Beyond the effects on the immediate area, the glaciers of the Himalayas have worldwide importance. These glaciers contain 40 percent of the world's fresh water, feed nine large rivers and provide one-sixth of the world's drinking water. And back here at home, over the last 100 years, the planet's surface has warmed by about 1.5°F. Northwest Montana has warmed at about twice that rate. This rapid rate of warming is melting the glaciers, in Glacier National Park increasing the severity and likelihood of wildfires, and shifting wildlife habitat. Contributions to Climate Ride support the Glacier National Park Conservancy. The Conservancy helps assure the Glacier National Park experience by providing support for preservation, education, and research through philanthropy and outreach. The Conservancy supports and invests in extraordinary Glacier projects that sustain Glacier National Park for generations today, and for the future. http://bit.ly/2H8DTEf
