After months of announcements, countdowns, articles and discussions, today is a significant day for web developers and IT professionals across the industry. April 8, 2014 marks the day that Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 are no longer supported by Microsoft. Why is this day so special? Windows XP and IE6 were stout software offerings for their time - IE6 bringing many enhancements over prior version 5.5 - but like some computer software and hardware, these products far outlived their intended service date. As the years passed, continuing to build support for the IE6 browser became a time-consuming and costly endeavor for web designers and developers. Removing it from our list of 'gotchas' allows us to build more modern websites, with more features than ever before.Have an older computer? Don't forget to update IE to the latest version, or download Google Chrome for a lightweight browser that automatically keeps itself up-to-date.
