DUBAI, 10th July, 2017 (WAM) -- The Journalists Association and the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue today started a training programme for the Association's members at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dubai Media City, to highlight the role of journalists in promoting human rights, in the presence of Ambassador Idriss Al Jazairy, Executive Director of the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue, and Mohamed Yousef, Chairman of the Journalists Association.The four-day awareness training programme will include a diverse group of lectures that will provide a clear image of human rights, and highlight its importance and key role in strengthening the concepts of security and peace, as well as in combatting extremism and discrimination, and rejecting racism and bias based on sex, religion and other factors.During his opening speech, Al Jazairy stressed the importance of human rights in protecting the rights and dignity of people while highlighting the goals of the programme, which aims to provide a clear image of this subject and promote the role of journalists in enhancing human rights, based on their ability and their role in changing and affecting public opinion within their communities.Al Jazairy inaugurated the programme's series of lectures with a lecture by the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue, titled, "The Purpose of the Programme, the Goals". Dr. Pierre Sob, Founding Director of Horizon Learning Link and President of Africa 21, participated in a lecture, titled, "The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights".Kamelia Kemileva, Executive Manager of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, participated in two lectures. The first was titled, "The United Nations Human Rights Instruments: The Mechanisms Based on the Charter and Treaties", and the second, "The Human Rights Council: The Structure and Performance". Al Jazairy also presented a lecture, titled, "The Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council: The Range and Limits of the Work of those Designated with Authorities".On the second day of the programme, Othman Al Haji, Founder of the Human Rights Centre at Al Jinan University and Independent Human Rights Expert, will participate in two lectures. The first will be titled, "The Complete Periodic Revision of the Human Rights Council", while the second will "The Cases of Forced or Involuntary Disappearance".Mohammed Amin Al Midani, President of the Arab Centre for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Education, will present two lectures, the first will be titled, "The System of Human Rights in the Arab League", and the second will be titled, "Islam and Human Rights: the Human Rights System in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation".On the third day, Judge Omar Mekki, Regional Legal Co-ordinator of the Middle East and North Africa Organisation in the International Committee of the Red Cross, will present a lecture, titled, "Interactions between International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law: The Case of Non-International Armed Conflicts".
