Modern marketing is about a mix of skills and experience. When it comes to content, it's important to know what you can do, and what you can't We've started doing editing and writing workshops for marketing people. As content professionals this might seem a bit self-destructive. As the old saying goes: "Teach a man to fish and they won't buy your fish anymore." But actually we like the idea of more marketing people, who are after all our clients, knowing what we're talking about. Also, they increasingly want to take part in the fishing and writing process - maybe not standing up to their waist in the river getting cold, but instead assembling the tackle and bait, and doing some of the cleaning and gutting after. Enough fish metaphors. Why are marketing people interested? Look at their world (and also anywhere on FirstWord's website) and you'll see that content marketing is a fast growing component of the marketing mix; companies need well-produced words (and pictures and video) to fill their websites and social media with material that people find useful, enjoy and share.
