Deva Travel Blog Responsible Travel - travelling with a heart

Here at Deva Travel, we pride ourselves on being well 'travelled', and have the privilege of sending our clients on wonderful trips near and far. As individuals, travel truly is our passion and we are so lucky to work in this industry. But did you know that in the worlds 40 poorest countries, tourism is their second largest source of income? This means that as travellers, we have a great opportunity to make a real difference to the people in those local communities that we are so fortunate to visit. 'Responsible Travel' conjures up lots of different images - being environmentally conscious, respecting local cultures and observing their customs, which are all really important attributes to travelling responsibly. It is also crucial that we support these communities to ensure the locals are getting a fair deal.Through travelling, we can start to make a difference, however small. How?• Eat out in local restaurants.• Buy locally made souvenirs - a more authentic and precious memento than a mass-produced one.• Research excursions and daytrips prior to departure. For example,Africa Collection works closely with Uthando, a fair trade and non-profit in South Africa which operates community development projects and offers many and varied private tours and experiences to their travellers.• If you're feeling 'adventurous' why not look into taking an escorted tour with one of our specialist operators such as G Adventures, Explore or Intrepid? These companies all offer authentic travel experiences varying from home stays with local families, using small local hotels, and visiting local projects. And no, 'Adventure Travel' doesn't mean you'll be roughing it. Most of our Adventure tour operators offer a 'comfort' or 'premium' option. Some of our most cherished memories of travelling come from the people we meet. By respectfully immersing ourselves with local cultures, people and communities we can all benefit.Ladera, St LuciaAmanda was lucky enough to stay at Ladera in St Lucia last year and was impressed by the resorts sympathy to the local environment. The resort boasts eco-lodge architecture built with Caribbeantimber and rooms are decorated with tiles and stone work all done by local artisans. The award winning Dasheene restaurant serves beautiful locally sourced food. Ladera blends in with its stunning surroundings and with all rooms having no 4th wall, you are at one with nature.Six Senses Laamu, MaldivesCaroline's idyllic holiday to the Maldives this year took in the wonderful Six Senses Laamu resort. This resort is committed to monitoring their performance and sustainable activities against goals set by Green Globe Benchmarks. They are dedicated to obtaining goods and services from the local area, supporting their local economy. They also have a programme in place to protect the island and nearby reefs, and have a code of conduct in place for their dolphin watching tours. In conjunction with Travel Weekly, I have been selected as Responsible Travel Ambassador for G Adventures. I'll be joining a tour inPeruto see for myself how their initiatives, through tourism, are making a difference. Their projects in Peru include the Cusco Kids Project, providing guidance and support to keep them off the streets, a weaving project in the Sacred Valley, and a locally run campsite in the Lares Valley, amongst others. Planeterra is their non-profit foundation which is making a real difference to peoples' lives across the world.
