This month, Kirit Desai, Derive Technologies' CEO, and our company, were were recognized as Carey Gabay Excellence and Innovation Awardees, which celebrate New York certified Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) for their "entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to innovation and efforts to strengthen their communities." The honor, from NYS Empire State Development, was "named for Carey Gabay, who served as an Assistant Counsel to Governor Cuomo and as First Deputy Counsel for Empire State Development before he was tragically killed in September 2015." Mr. Desai, and Derive's, award was given, according to the organization, in recognition that our company has followed, and continues to follow, "the principles that Carey Gabay lived during his service to New York State."
Mr. Desai said about the honor, and about recognizing and supporting diversity at Derive: "We have been able to grow this business and provide opportunities to 85 people right now, and they are all diversified. To be recognized by the State of New York... it is really fulfilling. Makes us really feel proud."
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said about the NYS MWBE program: "In New York, we know that diversity is a strength, not a weakness — and when we empower minority and women-owned businesses to compete for state contracts, we create a better New York for all..." Governor Cuomo continued: "Our nation-leading utilization rate reflects the unmatched pool of MWBEs in the Empire State and our concerted efforts to create a more equal playing field for these companies."
In addition to Derive and Mr. Desai, other 2019 Awardees for Entrepreneurial Spirit and Achievement as New York State Certified MWBEs were Laura Cueva, Interior Innovations, Mary Warren, Black Horse Group, LLC, and Edward O. Watts, Jr., Watts Architecture & Engineering, D.P.C.
