Since 2014, each person in the United States has been required to have health insurance. If you can afford health insurance but choose not to buy it, you must pay a penalty fee called the individual shared responsibility payment or "individual mandate." You will be forced to pay this fee on your federal income tax return for the year in which you lacked coverage.
