Core Telecom Systems Blog The Continuing Evolution of WiFi

In 2005 or 2006, I don't remember which specifically, I attended the NTCA Wireless Symposium in Dallas, TX. Many of the presentations were concerning the impending death of WIFI and the rise of WiMAX. WiMAX chips in phones, tablets and laptops were just around the corner promising much faster speeds at greater distances than the available WIFI protocols of the time. In hindsight, it seems clear that Mark Twain said it best, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." Just like Twain, the premature obituariesconcerning the end of WIFI were overly exaggerated. The rest is history. The Tier 1 carriers chose LTE as their path to 4G and WiMAX quietly slipped away over the next few years. And WIFI? Well, we all know the importance of WIFI in our everyday lives. We take it for granted. It's as important in our daily lives as gasoline in our cars or electricity in our homes. We carry our connection everywhere uploading pictures to Facebook and Snapchat while streaming Netflix. The Tier 1 carriers have invested heavily in leveraging WIFI to off load traffic from over-burdened LTE networks that lack the spectrum to deliver the promised speeds to bandwidth-hungry markets. WIFI has become one of the basic building blocks in how we run our businesses and how we live our lives. The problem with WIFI, something we demand access to in our daily lives and many of us can't live without, is that it really isn't a very secure technology. I rarely connect to a hotel WIFI network longer than necessary, as all my information is easily accessed by hackers, with less than $300 worth of equipment. I was recently in Las Vegas at a conference where I watched a presenter pull out a Chrome Book and a small USB antenna and within 3 minutes set up a "Man-in-the-Middle" attack. He instantly had access to every IP address on the network, not to mention capturing every image that each subscriber was viewing on their device. I remember worrying that big burly guys in Italian suits with names like Guido and Vinny would burst through the conference room doors and start busting knee caps at any time. In the end, the hotel and their connected guests never had any idea he was ever there.CORE Telecom has partnered with RG Nets and leading WIFI manufacturers to provide a carrier-class, secure solution that allows our customers to quickly and easily deploy a self-provisioning network that reduces OPEX and drive revenue in the most secure wireless environment available.
