October 16 is National Dictionary Day in honor of Noah Webster, considered to be the "father of the modern dictionary." He has also been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education." Webster was born October 16, 1758 and died May 28, 1843. According to Merriam-Webster online, he believed in the cultural independence of the United States, including a distinctive American language.
