Open House at the Kohlberg House Saturday, July 20, 5.30 - 9.30pm We have been busy all winter with the Kohlberg house restoration, which will be finished by mid-June. Our biggest obstacle has been the advanced state of rot and decay we found, due to the almost 20 years of extreme weather the house has sustained in it's exposed, bluff-top location. An almost complete reconstruction of the structure was needed, with all the associated costs in materials and labor. It's safe to say that the house and it's dramatic location have to be seen to be believed. So please join us as we celebrate the completion of the project! Festivities begin at 5.30. Refreshments will be served. Parking available at Newcomb Hollow parking lot which is a 15 min. walk away, or take a shuttle provided by CCMHT to the house from Newcomb Hollow. More details to follow. Free and open to the public. School Collaborations: This semester CCMHT is working with three schools, each of them exploring, and building upon our restored houses and archival resources. Re-imagining the Hatch House: A Project with Nauset High School Students We are collaborating this semester on a design studio with an enthusiastic group of students from Nauset Regional High School in Eastham, which offers an architectural design curriculum. With the help of their teacher, Richard Tichner, students are re-designing the Hatch house while retaining its' basic structural grid and modular concept. There will be a reception and exhibit of their models and drawings at the school before graduation. Details to follow. Note: Nauset High School was designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius' firm, TAC, in 1972 and there are ongoing discussions about how much of the campus to preserve during current renovation plans. Passive House Studio, Wentworth Institute: Assoc. Prof. Jennifer Lee Michaliszyn and guest Instructor Sayo Okada had their students analyze the four CCMHT houses regarding energy use and possible re-design to meet Passive House standards and well as design a secondary live/work building for artist/scholars. Their work is impressive. Stay tuned for a link to their work as it becomes available on-line. Retreat for Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) and the Office for Urbanism On the Ends of Architecture, a colloquium on the status of architecture's allied arts, a gathering including many of the leading thinkers in the field, was hosted last November at the recently restored Phillip Johnson Thesis House near Harvard Square. Themes discussed included the contemporary status of architectural conservation and preservation. Charles Waldheim, who leads the Office for Urbanism, the GSD and CCMHT are planning a continuation of this discussion in our restored houses in late May. The results of their work will be available soon after. Stay tuned. Summer Sunday House Tours Join us for tours of our four restored modern houses (each tour includes three houses) Tours begin at 11am at the Wellfleet Elementary School parking lot (100 Lawrence Rd. Wellfleet) Tours last 2.5 to 3 hours. First come first serve. Cost: $35 per person For reservations, please contact: betsycapemodern@gmail.com Lecture - Peter McMahon Bauhaus Summers on the Outer Cape Tuesday, Aug. 20th. time TBA Salt Pond Visitor's Center, 50 Nauset Rd, Eastham This talk will focus on the diaspora of Bauhaus students, faculty and friends and how they settled on the outer Cape. 2019 is the 100 year anniversary of the founding of the school whose impact only seems to grow and become more relevant. Free and open to the public. More details to come. Bucky Fuller's Island Home Aaron Binaco, advisory board member and friend of the Trust, visited Bear Island in Maine last Fall and and took these evocative images of the remnants of Buckminster Fuller's experimental domes. The Restless Hungarian - Book Launch After many years of travel, research and work Tom Weidlinger has published the fascinating life story of his father, the great engineer Paul Weidlinger, who made many of the iconic structures of the modern movement possible. Tom was very engaged in CCMHT's restoration of his childhood summer house which served as an impetus, and later a writing retreat, for the book. Stay tuned for info on upcoming readings.
