Cavalier House Books Blog A Read & Review Club Review: The Eye of Midnight by Andrew Brumbach

The CHB Read & Review Club is for educators and students who enjoy reading and would like to share the joy of reading with others through reviewing and recommending books. As a bookshop, we often receive special review copies of books in advance of their release dates so that we can review them. However, since we can only read so many books and we value the thoughts and opinions of other readers, CHB is recruiting educators and students to read and review advance reader copies (or arcs) of books that we receive, and we'll post their reviews on the Cavalier House Books website via the Read & Review Club Blog!Samantha B. (16) is a Read & Review Club member, and she has written a review of The Eye of Midnight by Andrew Brumbach! From the publisher's marketing: On a stormy May day in 1929, William and Maxine arrive on the doorstep of Battersea Manor to spend the summer with a grandfather they barely remember. Whatever the cousins expected, Colonel Battersea isn t it. Soon after they settle in, Grandpa receives a cryptic telegram and promptly whisks the cousins off to New York City so that he can meet an unknown courier and collect a very important package. Before he can do so, however, Grandpa vanishes without a trace. When the cousins stumble upon Nura, a tenacious girl from Turkey, she promises to help them track down the parcel and rescue Colonel Battersea. But with cold-blooded gangsters and a secret society of assassins all clamoring for the same mysterious object, the children soon find themselves in a desperate struggle just to escape the city s dark streets alive. Check out what Samantha has to say about the book:Wow, all I can really say is wow. I mainly picked the book out because I loved how the cover was done. I never expected it to be such an amazing book! The Eye of Midnight was extremely hard to put down! I wanted to see what came next. It could've been two o'clock in the morning and I would still be reading because I wanted to find out what happened next. The ending.... Wow! The ending made me hold my breath! But I will not give any spoilers! I would definitely recommend this to middle grade students or just anyone who loves middle grade books. Sometimes getting the details right when you are writing historical fiction is hard - mainly because it is fiction - but Brumbach nails every detail! Action, suspense, thrills, mystery - who would not love this book? The characters were all unique and interesting so I was never bored. It was well thought out, and I believe it was nearly perfect! I cannot wait for the sequel to come out. Give this book a try! I promise you will not be disappointed! The ending of the book really sets up for the next one, so anyone who reads the book will have to read the second to find out what happens! Thanks to Samantha for her review! The Eye of Midnight (Hardcover)By Andrew Brumbach$16.99ISBN: 9780385744614Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 DaysPublished: Delacorte Books for Young Readers - March 8th, 2016Combining a 1920s New York setting with ancient Turkish and Arabian folklore and history, this novel reads like a young Indiana Jones adventure. . . .
