Guns kill tens of thousands of Americans every year. Tens of thousands
more are injured. Since the 1960’s, nearly 1.5 million people have
lost their lives because of guns.
Despite the clear and present danger these weapons pose to Americans, nothing
has changed. Pro-gun advocates say that this is not the time to discuss
gun control while legislators fade into the background and wait for the
initial media storm to die down.
Just last year,
attorney Patrick Dunphy handled a case against a former gun shop in Milwaukee that negligently sold a semi-automatic hand gun to a straw
buyer. Straw buyers purchase guns for people not legally able to do so
themselves. The gun was used to shoot two police officers during a routine
stop of the illegal gun owner. Both officers suffered serious injuries,
and one was forced into retirement.
Eventually, the gun shop surrendered its license., but sadly it’s
just one part of a much greater story with an ever-rising body count.
The numbers tell the story of a silent epidemic of gun death ignored by
the media and seemingly unknown by most of the public,” Dunphy wrote
in an Op-Ed for Urban Milwaukee. “In 2015, there were 475 deaths
in mass shootings (defined as four or more deaths in one shooting). Compare
that to 12,942 killed in homicides, accidental shootings and murder/suicides

While this case was unique it is an example of the commitment of Cannon
