Many New York motorcycle accidents involve larger vehicles whose drivers failed to see the smaller vehicles. Every so often, however, news stories report an accident that only involves these two-wheeled vehicles. Sadly, a fatal accident can still occur even if a larger car or truck is not involved.The Queensboro Bridge in New York City recently became the scene of a fatal accident that involved two motorcycles. Police say that a driver and a passenger occupied each motorcycle as they came off the bridge at approximately 3:30 a.m. Somehow, the two motorcycles collided on the exit ramp.The passenger on one of them fell to the ground. While she lay there, the other motorcycle ran over her. The 32-year-old woman suffered fatal injuries at the scene.The two drivers and the other passenger all suffered unknown injuries. They were transported to a hospital in the area for treatment. The response to the last inquiry regarding their conditions indicated that they are all stable. It is not yet known whether the New York City Police Department has concluded its investigation into this fatal accident, or whether criminal charges may be filed.Regardless, the two motorcycle drivers may benefit from determining what their rights and responsibilities are in connection with the crash since one or both of them could face civil actions even if no criminal charges are filed. The family of the deceased passenger, the surviving passenger and the drivers may be entitled to awards for monetary damages if a civil court finds that their injuries were caused or contributed to by the negligence of another. If the evidence documents that both drivers shared some responsibility for the crash, any award made to either of them may be reduced by the percentage of responsibility the court assigns to each of them.
