Bump My Lock Blog What is a bump key and how does it work?

A bump key is a specially crafted tool that corresponds with a specific lock brand and type. The number of ridges on the key must be equivalent to the number of pins in the lock. For example a 5 pin Schlage brand lock would require the SC1 Bump Key , the SC8 Bump Key, or the SC19 Bump Key, each of which have 5 ridges (SC1 is the most common of the three). The best way to figure out which key you will need is to look at the brand name on the lock and the head of the original key for that lock. There are many brands that use similar keyways that are based on a well-known brand. An example of this would be Defiant. The Defiant brand uses the Kwikset keyway, so the KW1 Bump Key or KW10 Bump Key would work for a Defiant lock (KW1 is the most common of the two).Once you have figured out which bump key you will need, the challenge begins. For some, the technique of "bumping a lock" comes naturally...for others it is a learning process that takes time and patience. Lock bumping is a skill, not everyone can just open the package, take out the key, and open the lock. The first step is to make sure that the bump key you bought is the correct one for the lock you are wanting to open. If the key does not easily go all the way into the lock, it is not the right one for that lock.If the key is indeed the correct one for your lock, the next step is to pull the key out one notch from the lock. Now, while putting slight torque on the key (equivalent to the amount of pressure you would use to turn the key), bump it with an evenly dispersed force, ideally from a BBH-1 Standard Flex Bump Hammer or a BBH-2 Flex Plus Bump Hammer . If the lock does not open, then repeat the process. Again, it is important to understand that most locks will not open the first time. The technique of the bumping, the age of the lock, and the condition of the lock all play a role in the degree of difficulty. Some of these locks will require the aid of a lock bumping lubricant . The lock bumping lubricant can help by freeing up stiff, hard to bump locks. It also protects locks from damage caused by improper bump technique. The lubricant is dry and graphite based, so it will not damage any lock.
