Wednesday, May 9, 2018 For Immediate ReleaseApril Freeman - Candidate for US House Florida's 17the Congressional District Statement: Withdrawing from the JCPOAThe P5+1 world powers (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany) negotiated with Iran over Iran's nuclear program from 2013 until July of 2015 when the agreement was implemented. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) would successfully prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.Principled and tough diplomacy, and U.S. Leadership kept America safe without firing a single shot. The Trump Administration previously certified Iranian compliance with Congress in April and again in July 2017. However, President Trump decided not to re-certify Iran's compliance in October of 2017, despite no change in behavior. Yesterday, President Trump went one step further announcing he withdrew the United States from the JCPOA. Iran's history of oppression, corruption, and terrorism is real, we have no illusions about the Iranian regime. This is exactly why the Obama Administration prioritized preventing them from getting a nuclear weapon, as has been U.S. policy for years-after all, the implementation of this agreement has been the only action to freeze and roll back Iran's nuclear program.Which is why withdrawing from the agreement is a tragic mistake. Not only will it divide us from our European allies, it will allow Iran to build a nuclear bomb within one year! ###
