Especially for lighting, there are numerous DIY projects you can easily do at home. This one will end up with you having your very own home-made lamp and you'll save money by making it yourself. In this blog, we'll give you all the instructions you need to build your own wooden desk lamp. The bulb can be bought in our online shop and the other materials can be easily acquired at your local DIY store. Enjoy doing this fun DIY project to make your very own wooden desk lamp that you can then use to light up your home.
Material for building your DIY lamp:
wood block, prebored
sand paper
E27 LED bulb, we recommend: filament lamp
textile cable with E27 socket, plug, switch
4x anti-slip sticker
optional: decorations for wood block, e.g. paint, stamps, Washi
Instructions:
1. Prepare wood block
Have a wooden block cut to length at your local hardware store or cut it yourself. Maybe you still have wood waste you can use and make your DIY lamp an upcycling project. For this DIY lamp, we used a wood block with the dimensions 10 x 10 x 10 cm .
In the centre of the wood block, drill a hole all the way through which is wide enough for an E27 socket. Don’t forget, you'll also need to make a small notch on the bottom of the block for the cable so that the lamp will stand up straight. If you don't feel confident enough to drill the hole and cut out the notch yourself or you don't have the right tools for the job, your local DIY store should be able to do this for you.
Make sure the wood block is nice and smooth. This is especially important if you plan on decorating the lamp base or painting it. Use sandpaper to rub down any rough surfaces.
Now it’s time to get creative: paint, stamp or decorate the block with Washi tape. You can also leave it as it is if you want a more natural look.
2. Attach anti-slip stickers
In order for the lamp not to scratch your surfaces, attach a small anti-slip sticker to each corner on the bottom of the wood block.
3. Pull through cable
Textile cables that come complete with a plug and switch can be bought at your local hardware store. Simply pull the cable through the hole in the wood block from top to bottom. In order for your DIY desk lamp to stand up straight, press the cable gently into the pre-made notch.
4. Insert E27 LED bulb
You can use any LED bulb with an E27 cap/base for your wooden DIY desk lamp. Pay attention to the kind of cable you're using and choose a bulb with an appropriate wattage. Textile cables come in different colours and are an easy way to add an extra touch of style to your lamp.
An important thing to take into consideration is the colour temperature of the bulb you buy. For a cosy ambiance, choose an extra warm white or warm white colour temperature. In our example, we've used the Osram Vintage 1906 LED E27 Globe 4W 824 Gold. This bulb has a low energy consumption of only 4 W, an extra warm white colour temperature (2.400 K) and an elegant, gold-coated globe shape. That makes this vintage LED bulb a great eyecatcher.
Of course, you can use any other E27 LED bulb, so long as it's suitable for the cable you're using:

5. Plug in and switch on
Your DIY lamp is ready! Simply plug it in, switch it on and enjoy the light.
