Aemmplify Blog Artist of the Week Nov. 2 Jonny Blaze

BioJonny Blaze is an eclectic artist and producer with a unique approach to his blend of electronic music. His thought-provoking work dwells on the constant relationship between technology and the need to discover.Jonny Blaze translates this way of thinking into sound, going for an incredibly kaleidoscopic sonic landscape where all conventions are skillfully blurred.InterviewWhat is your inspiration?Well I think that my inspiration can be found anywhere. I know that is very vague but very true. I am the type of person who absorbs surroundings very well. Inspiration for my newest album Without Shapes came from a trip where I took to Glacier National Park and Olympic National Park. I think the pure beauty of those environments definitely rubbed off on this album. Most of my writing and recording happens during late fall- through winter so I think that also has a factor in my sound. Is there a genre you don't like?Yes, there is. This recent development of top 40's Country music drives me nuts!REAL country music as a genre is completely okay with me.I love pedal steel guitars and twangy guitars, old Gretsch drum kits! All cool stuff! But this new version of so called "Country" is enough to drive anyone wild! Think there's one that repeats the lyrics "I'm going to Disneyland" over and over. Come on!Would you ever put your music in a student film?I would and when I was a student at Columbia I actually did write a soundtrack for a short film project. It was a horror film and i wrote all these psychedelic awkward and augmented sounds that really gave off a suspenseful feeling. This was way back in the day when I still used Cubase for MIDI and VST Instruments. I had wrote up a little flyer and posted it in one of the buildings and someone shot me an email asking for me to help out on their film!Have you performed locally? Not yet with Jonny Blaze. I just started to work on booking shows and it is possible that I will have some shows lined up in early November. It has taken me some time to transfer what I do in the studio into a live set and feel conformable doing so. Playing this style of music live is a little alien to me as I am used to playing with a band, so there was a bit of a learning curve! I am really excited start playing out and will post updates as soon as I have bookings!Top 3 live music performancesFirst off, I really enjoy watching live performances equally if not more thanlistening to an album.I think when you can see an artist perform you can more clearly understand their intentions. To add to that the emotions that are released when a band is playing live are much different than the emotions that are released when recording. Not saying I don't enjoy albums, but one of the major factors for me to determine whether or not I truly enjoy an artist is their live set. That said... my top 3 live performances atthis moment are:Broken Bells Live on KEXPThe Tallest Man on Earth NPR - Tiny Desk ConcertTycho Live on KEXPFAVORITE MOVIE?I am going to alter the question just a little if you don't mind. As of late I have been really digging early Sci-fi films such as "Blade Runner", "Alien", "The Thing", original "Mad Max" series. What I enjoy about these films the most are the awesome synth soundtracks!Super cool analog synth tracks that I think fit these films perfect! On the other side of things Wes Anderson films have been very enjoyable as of late.Really dig the uniqueness and creativeness that goes into his films.I also enjoy that the characters in his films are constantly being developed throughout the story.
