I am continually amazed at the data which is available today from simple POS systems. In years past, this data would have required special programming to obtain it. Today, it is already programmed into the POS systems. The problem is many of our clients simply don't use it.For example, in a recent RFID Journal article, the editor was making a case for the necessity of using RFID tags for even small stores - to aide them with their replenishment. Seems he tried to buy a shirt in a particular size. Because he doesn't quite understand small retailers, he couldn't understand why they would be out of that size but still have smalls and extra larges available. He doesn't know (I guess) that small retailers buy by assortment generally and simply sell through. He was trying to make the case for RFID tags letting management help re-buy those out of stock shirts. I guess he doesn't know that most items sold today have specific bar codes available right now to help management know when a particular size sells out. The problem isn't really not having the data available. The problem is many retailers don't use the information available to them. There's any number of reasons for this - assortment buying instead of individual buys, not having time , etc. etc. The reality is with some effort, you CAN use the data to grow your business.
