We recently performed a barcode inventory for a long time customer. The owner of the store is not the most adept at IT. Most Point of Sale systems allow easy updates to inventories - simply import the new data, update and away you go. Normally, this we leave the file and the manager / owner imports and updates after we leave. As I said, it's not complicated and most POS systems have step by step procedures. However, in this particular case, the POS system can only be updated by the vendor. No very customer centered but OK. Until you attempt to have them perform the update. You have to call their help desk and the person answering the phone is seemingly not qualified to do this function. You have to have a higher level person do it. Of course, they aren't immediately available. So, after a 1/2 hour wait (with a crew standing around) the task is accomplished and by the way, the vendor charges additional fee for doing this (in addition to their normal help desk monthly fee). The whole point of this tirade is to simply remind people that POS systems can be pricey but consider ALL the costs before purchasing. Help desks can be important but find out what help you are getting. There are too many POS systems out there to not get what you want.
