ADAS CoPilot Blog ADAS Sensor Usage and Overview

Today's and tomorrow's ADAS systems are being driven by software, hardware, cameras and sensors. Sensing systems are the major components of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. ADAS provides features like forward collision avoidance, lane departure warnings, pedestrian detection, parking assistance and adaptive cruise control. Many of today's ADAS systems use cameras to deliver ADAS effectively, combined with rear cameras that are used for parking assistance. It is well known that camera-based systems have range limitations, do not provide depth while operating only in visible light conditions and become less reliable in fog, snow, and at night. Depth sensing is also a challenge but can be solved using stereo camera systems. Multi-camera systems are also used to provide a 360 degree viewFor semi-autonomous driving capabilities and advanced ADAS solutions such as advanced cruise control, LiDAR, Radar, and ultrasound sensors are being used. These systems add 3D depth-sensing, better "vision" longer range. When we move from Level 2 and 3 autonomy to level 4 and level 5 AV's, these vehicles require a real-time 3D, 360-degree "vision" combined with the ability to distinguish objects and accurate depth perception. There is also a need for advanced sensor fusion algorithms and control systems to deliver on the adaptive cruise control featuresLiDAR systems have much longer-range capabilities than cameras, but its resolution is not as good. On the other hand, LiDAR operates well in different environmental conditions than cameras. LiDAR also has better resolution than Radar and is able to create an outline of objects which can be distinguished from one another.Other sensor types like Radar, cameras, and ultrasound systems are typically used for system redundancy and to improve accuracy while high-definition 3D maps, and sensor fusion algorithms help make accurate real-time 3D images from data inputs received from different sensors and artificial intelligence (AI).
